Hillary Clinton Praises Women from Northern Ireland
HillaryClintonHillary Clinton heaped praise on the women of Northern Ireland today for the crucial role they played winning peace in the region.

At a special event to mark the re-opening of Belfast City Hall after a two-year £11 million refurbishment, the US secretary of state paid tribute to the mothers, wives, sisters and daughters who came together during the dark days of the Troubles to break down long standing divisions.

"I couldn't come here without recognising a special group - the women of Belfast and the women of Northern Ireland," she said.

Tory Anger at Cameron's All-Women Short Lists
uk-justinegreeningDavid Cameron caused Tory uproar today by promising to bring in all women shortlists before the election.

In a surprise move he announced that from January, Conservative headquarters will prevent local branches picking men in some safe seats.

He aims to bump up the number of Tory women who make it to the Commons at the next general election from a current projection of just 30.

But Tim Montgomerie, the activists' champion who edits Conservative Home, said: "All women shortlists are fundamentally unConservative and they have no place in a party pledged to meritocracy and localism... We feared this would happen."

Relatives Weep at Caroline McElhill's 999 Call

uk-999Relatives wept as they listened to a harrowing 999 call made by a terrified schoolgirl moments before she died with six other family members in a house fire in Omagh two years ago.

An inquest opened on Tuesday into the final moments of Arthur McElhill, Lorraine McGovern and their five children, who died in the blaze in Omagh in November 2007.

McElhill, a registered sex offender, has been suspected of starting the fire in which he and his family perished.

An independent report by Henry Toner QC has already criticised how information was communicated within the Western Health and Social Care Trust and other agencies and the assessment of potential risks posed by McElhill to teenage girls.

Crime Map Could Help Lancashire Become Safer
uk-crimemapA Home Office crime map launched today which allows people to compare crime rates in their neighbourhood has already been available in Lancashire for over three years.

The Lancashire MADE Public website broke new ground in 2006 by giving people access to a wealth of information on crime and disorder where they live.

By simply entering their postcode, people who log onto the site can find facts on calls to emergency services, violent crime, anti-social behaviour, deliberate fire setting, vehicle crime, road safety and domestic burglaries.
